Hi. I'm Rebecca from www.engvid.com. In the past 30 years, I've worked with thousands of students from all over the world to help them improve their English communication skills. In the past year, I've been researching the most important errors and the most common errors made by English learners. And what I've done is I've put all of this information together into a course. It's called: "Correct Your English Errors in 10 Minutes a Day". I'm very excited to tell you about this course, because I really think it's an easy, quick, fast way for you to improve your English and take it to a higher level. All right?
But first what I want to do is tell you: What are the points you have to keep in mind when you are trying to improve your English? What do you need to know about correcting your errors? So, let me share a little bit of my results from my research so it can help you. Okay? And then we will look at specific types of errors, and do a little quiz to see where you stand. Okay? Let's get started.
So, first, when you're correcting your English, really, you can do two things. Right? When you're improving your English, you can do two things; you can learn what's right or correct what's wrong. Now we're talking about this area where we correct what's wrong. So, in order to correct what's wrong, what do you need to do? First, you need to know what's wrong. So, when I get an essay or I get an email to correct, what's the problem? It's not that the person was trying to make mistakes. They weren't trying to make mistakes; they're trying to do their best. Right? That's what you do. Every time you write or every time you speak, but you didn't know that something was wrong. So, first you have to know what's wrong.
Then you have to understand why it's wrong. Why is it this word and not that word? Why is it this verb tense and not that verb tense? And so on and so forth. Okay? Then you have to learn how to fix it. Okay? Is it a spelling change? It is a punctuation error? What kind of mistake is it? That's what we're going to be looking at - the types of mistakes. Because once you understand and correct a type of mistake, you will correct lots of mistakes all at once. Okay? And that's what I want you to do; to make quick progress, fast progress. Okay.
Then what you need to do, which many students do, is to practice it immediately. So, for example, if I teach you something in this lesson or in any one of my engVid lessons, after you watch it, what you need to do is to practice something with that immediately. That's why we usually have a quiz-right?-so that you can go there right away, do some more practice to put that information really into your head; and not just to put it passively there, but to use it. Right? To use whatever you've learned in a practical way.
So, you need to practice it immediately, but sometimes that's where students stop. They practice it right away, and then they don't touch it after that, and they think: "I did it. I know it", but not quite. So, what's also very, very important in terms of our brain, in terms of how we learn, in terms of how we remember is this point, here: That you need to review it frequently. Review anything that you learn often; otherwise, it's not going to stay with you. So, for example, in my course, what we have are we have daily quizzes, we have weekly tests, we have monthly reviews with the same material. Okay? So that after a while, you say: "Of course I know that. I know how... The difference between 'it's' and 'its'. I know the difference between 'affect' and 'effect'. That's not a problem", because you've reviewed it. If you don't review it, then it's going to drop away. Okay? So this is an essential part of brain-based learning, of very smart learning. Not just hard learning, but smart learning.
And then you need to know what's important. So, let's say you get back your essay and there are twenty corrections. So, are they all equally important? No. Some are critical. If you make some mistakes, you can get very low marks on your IELTS or TOEFL, you could lose a job possibility… […]

Hi, and welcome to our series on Speaking English Powerfully. Today, youll learn how adding just one word can change how you sound instantly. Youll see how this one word can make you sound more fluid, more natural, and more confident in English. Alright? Are you ready to learn what those words are? One word at a time, here we go. Okay.
So, the words were speaking about here are do, does, or did. Okay? We only use one at a time. Now, these are not new words for you. These are words that youre familiar with. You know do and does from the present tense, but you know it in terms of asking a question or in a negative form, or if youre just answering or giving a short answer, like Yes, I do. Okay? Like that. But here, were going to learn how to use these words in positive, affirmative sentences. Why? Because theyre going to add more emphasis and oomph to what were saying. The same with the word did in the past tense. Youre used to using the word did for questions, for negatives, and for short answers, but now youre going to see how to use this word did to emphasize something, to put more focus on what youre saying. And usually, we are using this technique to clarify something, to make it more clear, or to correct something that someone said, or to contrast it, to show the difference between what they said and what you think and what youre trying to express. Okay?
So, let me give you some examples so you understand exactly how it works, and Im sure youll also hear the difference. All right? So, here we go. Lets say someone gives you an idea, and they say... And you say... They say, Okay, this is my idea, and you say, I like your idea. Or you could say, I do like your idea. See the difference? Which one is stronger? I do like your idea versus I like your idea? The first one sounded weak, even if its true. The second one makes it sound more true and more sincere. It can also be that the person said, Well, heres my idea, but I dont know if youre going to like it, you might not like it. And you say... And if you say, I do like your idea, youre saying, No, thats not true that I dont like it. I do like it. Youre emphasizing it; youre putting more focus on it. Okay? So its stronger and very clear for the person to understand. Then that persons going to be really happy. Yeah, really? You like my idea? Wow. Theyre going to be thrilled. Okay? All right. Next.
So, this was, of course, in present, in the present tense. The next one is also a present tense affirmative sentence. So, lets say something happened, and your friend had an argument with his girlfriend, and hes feeling really sad, and then... And youre trying to make your friend feel better, and you said, No, come on. Dont worry. She cares about you. And hes feeling really bad because he forgot her birthday or something, and he said... And so you could say, She does care about you. Its not true she doesnt care about you. She does care about you. She just needs a little time to get over the fact that you forgot her birthday. Okay? Something like that. But when we say, She does care about you, youre emphasizing it. Okay? Youre clarifying it. And youre correcting, perhaps, what the other person thought, and its a little more powerful way to express yourself. So you can see that you could use this in a business context, can use this in a personal context. Okay? Now lets look at did. Okay? Did, thats now going to be in the past. So somebody says, Oh, you didnt send us the files. And you say, We sent the files. Nothing wrong with that, but its just basic. To make it stronger, what could you say? We did send the files. Havent you received them yet? We did send them. Youre emphasizing it. Okay? So, again, do, does, and did are those magic words that you could add to positive sentences to make them stronger and more intentional and with more energy. Okay?
Now, lets look at some more examples of how these simple words can make positive sentences sound even more powerful. Okay? So, the first three are from the professional world. For example, I do appreciate your feedback. […] SPEAK ENGLISH POWERFULLY: Just Add ONE Word! | Free English Course](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/u-eYRIyCQwc/mqdefault.jpg)

Hi, Im Rebecca from engVid, and this is a very special lesson for me and I hope for you as well. In this lesson, I want to give you the vocabulary of respect. What does that mean? I want to show you several words that you can use to express your feelings of gratitude or thankfulness to someone or some people who you know have helped you and who have been kind to you, and so on. Now, you can always show your thanks and your gratitude to someone by simply saying thanks or thank you, right? We can use these very basic words, and you should. Thats absolutely fine. However, it can be even more meaningful to have some more words to follow up with after that or to find other ways in which to express these very important feelings and ideas to someone else.
Now, the vocabulary that were going to look at today can be used in your personal life or in your professional life because we need to express this in all kinds of situations, whether its to the people who are near and dear to us, our family, our friends, and so on, or whether its to people we work with, our colleagues, our managers. We need to show and establish a kind of relationship where we express to others the gratitude and the good feelings that we have for things that they have done for us or for things or for who they are. So, Im going to give you the vocabulary to do that. Were going to do that with six main verbs, and then were going to look at lots of other expressions and collocations that you can combine these verbs with to express these ideas. Okay? So, I hope this lesson will interest you and that you will start to use this to express some very important feelings to others. All right.
So, lets begin here with one of the most commonly used words, and that is this one, appreciate. Okay? So, thats a verb that many students do use. I see that in emails and so on, and many people will write something like, Thanks. I appreciate it. So, what does it mean to appreciate something? It means that you are... You realize that its important, you realize that its relevant, and you recognize that its special and you want to thank someone a little bit more, and so you appreciate that. Okay? You say, I appreciate it. Now, you could simply say, Thank you. I appreciate it, if you already described what it is that the other person did for you that you appreciate, that you understand, has value, has importance. Or you can go further with your... And Im going to give you the vocabulary so that you can be really precise, and thats part of having a more educated vocabulary, a more advanced vocabulary, is being able to describe exactly what it is that youre showing your appreciation for. So, lets look at some possibilities. And you could actually start to include this when youre speaking or in an email. All right? So, lets look at that.
So, first of all, lets look at the pronunciation of this word. Okay? Its written like this, but its pronounced like this, ah-pree-shee-ate. Say it after me, ah-pree-shee-ate, ah-pree-shee-ate. The stress is on ah-pree-shee-ate, so the stress is here. Okay? Ah-pree-shee-ate, I ah-pree-shee-ate that, I ah-pree-shee-ate it. Okay? Next. If were going to be more specific, then we could say something like this, I ah-pree-shee-ate your help. Thats a sentence by itself. I ah-pree-shee-ate your assistance. Assistance is just a little more formal or business-like word for help. Same thing. I ah-pree-shee-ate your time. Somebody spent time to help you, to explain something to you, to advise you, to guide you, so you could add that. Or, I ah-pree-shee-ate your input or your contribution, okay? When somebody gave something to you, that added to something that you were working on, a project, a report, or something like that, and they gave you their thoughts, their ideas, or their information, or they took part in it, then thats their input, what they put in. Or, what they contributed, okay? Alright. […] The Vocabulary of Respect: 40 Ways to Improve Your English & Our World](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/uAES_V0_ZIA/mqdefault.jpg)

In this lesson, youll learn seven very common idioms that you might hear anywhere. You could hear them when youre out with your friends, you could hear them at school, you could hear them at work, okay? So, lets learn what they are so that when people use them, youll understand what theyre saying, and perhaps after that, youll go to the next step and youll also start to use some of them yourself. Theyre not very hard, okay? So, lets see what they are.
So, first of all, there are about seven of them on the board, and they can be used in this way. So, before any of them, okay, you need to put the name of a person or you need to use a pronoun, because they all start with kind of a verb. So, we need to say, for example, Im sitting on the fence, Hes sitting on the fence, Shes sitting on the fence, Were sitting on the fence, Theyre sitting on the fence, Are you sitting on the fence? Okay? Like that. So, you need to put a subject here before that, okay? So, lets get started with the first one, alright? I just put these at the top so that we can use them in our examples.
So, the first one is Hes sitting on the fence. So, what does that mean? And first of all, whats a fence anyway? Well, first of all, if theyre idioms, you dont have to know the exact meaning of each word, you have to know the overall meaning, but just for you to understand. So, lets suppose you have two houses and theyre divided by something, by some sort of a structure. That structure is usually a fence, it might be made of wood or metal or something else, right? Thats a fence. So, if somebodys sitting on the fence, it means that he is undecided, hes not sure which way to go. This way? That way? He cant decide, okay? So, somebody is sitting on the fence when they are undecided. For example, lets say somebody is sitting on the fence about who theyre going to vote for, okay? In an election. Or theyre sitting on the fence about which university to join, or which boy or girl to go out with, okay? Theyre sitting on the fence, theyre unsure, theyre thinking still, theyre not sure. Sitting on the fence means being undecided, okay.
The next one, shes having a whale of a time, okay? Shes having a whale of a time means having a wonderful time, an exceptional time, a great time, a really fun, marvelous, superb time, okay? So, if you say Im having a whale of a time, Im having a beautiful time. So, lets say when you go on holiday, if somebodys on their honeymoon or something like that, theyre having a whale of a time, theyre having a wonderful time, okay?
Alright, the next one. If we say, oh, hes pulling your leg, okay, this doesnt actually mean that somebodys pulling your leg. Its an idiom, which means that somebodys kidding you, somebodys joking with you, okay? Theyre not - dont take them seriously. So, brothers and sisters, you know, do this a lot to each other. Lets say the brother says to the little sister, oh, theres a spider in your bed, or theres a mouse in your closet, and the sister goes, oh my gosh, okay, whatever. Or the other way around, okay? So, theyre not being serious, theyre telling a lie, but not in a serious way, its just to joke with somebody or to kid someone. So, when that happens, we say that shes pulling your leg or hes pulling your leg, okay? Not serious.
Alright. The next one. If we say, hes calling the shots. Hes calling the shots. That means that he is in charge, hes in control, hes the one whos making the important decisions, okay? So, we could say the managers calling the shots, the general managers calling the shots, the directors calling the shots, okay? So, usually, its talking about somebody who is in charge and making the important decisions. So, thats the meaning of calling the shots. Our first lesson on confusing English verbs was actually so popular that it got millions
of views.
I hope you had a chance to watch that, and as a result, we decided to continue the series
for you.
Okay?
So, heres todays lesson on 12 confusing verbs.
Some of these are similar in meaning, some of them sound the same, some of them have
spelling issues, so lets find out exactly what the difference is so that you can use
the right word at the right time.
Okay?
And before we get started, let me just remind you that I also have an entire online course
called Correct Your English Errors in 10 Minutes a Day, and if youd like to improve your English
step by step, I have over 160 different errors that you can correct in grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation, and so on, so please check that out if you wish.
Ill give you a link below.
All right?
But for now, shall we get started?
Lets do that.
Okay, so, in number one, do we say, Shes a good student.
I hope she gets a high score or I wish she gets a high score?
This one is confused by lots of students, so if youre not sure, youre not alone.
What do you think?
The correct answer is I hope she gets a high score.
So, lets understand.
Whats the difference between hope and wish?
Kind of have the same idea, but theyre actually completely different in English.
We use the word hope when there is a real chance or possibility that something will
happen.
For example, if you say that someone has really good experience and qualifications and I hope
he gets the job, because there is a real chance and possibility that he could get it, right?
But wish is more like, Oh, I wish I could win the lottery.
I wish I could retire tomorrow and youre only 22.
It can happen, its not impossible, but its more like a wish, a dream, okay?
So, its not an immediate, real possibility, all right?
So, thats the difference between hope and wish, all right?
Good.
Lets look at number two.
Do we say, Did you raise the subject with your boss? or Did you rise the subject with
your boss?
These are confused because they sound kind of similar, but they work completely differently
in terms of meaning.
So, the correct answer is, Did you raise the subject with your boss?
Okay.
So, let me show you an easy way to remember this one, all right?
So, raise is what we do voluntarily.
We have control over it.
For example, right now, I can raise my hand, right?
Okay?
If you own a store, you could raise your prices, right?
On certain special days, country - in different countries, they raise their flag, right?
Like on Independence Day or something like that, they raise their flag.
Somebody does it.
You have control.
You can raise your hand, raise the flag, raise your prices if you own a store, right?
So, with raise, you have control.
With rise, things happen for a number of reasons which you cant actually control.
For example, temperatures rise, okay?
In my home, I could raise the temperature on my thermostat, but outside, temperatures
rise for all kinds of reasons, as we know.
I dont have control over that.
Or, if Im talking about houses, the housing market, prices rise for a lot of economic
and financial reasons, right?
I cant control that specifically.
So, temperatures rise, prices rise, stock market prices rise, and its not that one
person is necessarily controlling it.
There are a lot of different factors, okay?
So, if you control it, you can raise something, but if something sort of happens by itself,
it rises.
Got it?
Good.
Lets look now at number three.
Do we say, Did they lose the bus? or Did they miss the bus?
Whats the difference?
Think about it.
We should be saying, Did they miss the bus? […] 12 Confusing English VERBS](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/v3IqFA-KGgI/mqdefault.jpg)

Today, Im going to show you two simple ways to speak more powerfully in English. Now, these techniques, once you start using them, will not only help people to understand you better, but also to pay attention to what youre saying, and to respect what youre saying more. And therefore, you will come across as a more confident speaker in English. Okay? Would you like to do that? Lets get started.
The first way is simply to remove the contraction. What is a contraction? A contraction is when we combine two words. For example, instead of saying I will, we say Ill. So Ill is the contraction, right? Instead of saying I am, we say Im. So Im is the contraction. But now, what were going to do is we are going to remove these contractions. Not all the time, but at certain times when you want to speak more powerfully and clearly. Lets look at an example, and youll understand very easily how powerful this technique is and how useful it is. Okay? Lets try it.
So, instead of saying to John, Yes, John, thats important, lets say John said something okay? And you say, Yes, John, thats important. Nothing wrong with that. Or we could say, Yes, John, that is important. What did we do? We took away the contraction. We removed the contraction. Yes, John, that is important. John feels heard also, right? Next, instead of saying to Mary, Yes, Mary, youre right. Its been a hard week. You could say that. Or Yes, Mary, it has been a hard week. Now, Mary feels validated. Mary feels more connected to you also because youre agreeing with her so powerfully. Okay? So, this will also improve your connection with people.
Lets look at another example. Here, before we get to the other example, so here what we did is we were strengthening it, right? We were confirming that. Here, we are clarifying or correcting it. So, for example, if someone says to you, So, youre not available tomorrow, right? And you say, No, Im available tomorrow. Or, No, I am available tomorrow. So you want to emphasize, you want to clarify and correct what that other person was saying. Yes, I am available tomorrow. Or someone says, You havent completed the project yet, right? And you say, Yeah, weve completed the project. Sounds okay, not very impressive, and completing a project is something important, right? So you can say instead, No, we have completed the project. We are so proud. We have completed it. Get it?
So, what did we do in all cases? We removed the contraction. You cant speak like this all the time, you cannot speak like this all the time, but definitely at certain points when you use this strategy, you will sound much more powerful.
Now, whats another way to sound even stronger? That is to remove the negative contraction. You got it, right. Lets see how it works, okay? And again, we can use this in business, in academic context, personal situations, social situations, anything, okay? Lets see how it sounds. Instead of saying, They cant meet the project deadline, or some people might just say it really fast, They cant meet the project deadline, and the person sometimes doesnt even hear the word cant. Because if you dont say that correctly, it can sound like they can, and then youre giving the wrong message, not just a weak message, but a wrong message. So here, you could say, for sure, They cannot meet the project deadline. And yes, cannot is one word, okay? They cannot meet the project deadline. So when someone hears that, they will hear you clearly, therell be no mistakes, and its very, very strong.
Next. The professor didnt agree. Or The professor did not agree. The professor did not agree. Again, you can feel the difference, right? I know.
The next one, She hasnt received her visa yet. Or, She has not received her visa yet. Okay?
And another one, I wont be able to attend the meeting. Again, if you dont say this word clearly, people may misunderstand you. So break it up. Break up the negative contraction, right? And say, I will not... I will not be able to attend the meeting. Okay? That way, youre not, in all cases, is very clear and independent, and the message is also very clear and also not mistaken.
