Right now, this may be the closest any human will get to living on a Martian outpost, all without leaving the safety of Earth. HI-SEAS is an analog astronaut research station. So it basically simulates what it would be like to be an astronaut on the Moon and on Mars.

Researchers from all over the world, in fields from astrophysics to engineering to geology, come to this white dome to test their experiments and see if they’ve got what it takes to live on another planet.

HI-SEAS is one of the most unique research stations in the world , sitting on an active volcano in Hawaii, about 2,500 meters above sea level. Researchers can stay at the habitat for weeks to months at a time working and living there. The goal? To understand how to survive in a place where no humans have lived before... which is why this site was chosen.

HI-SEAS Team Completes 8-Month Isolation Mission

“A team of six volunteer scientists completed one of the most extensive studies of the demands of life on a distant world by closing themselves off to the rest of the world for eight months in an effort known as HI-SEAS. Their chore wasn't so much to stay alive, but to see how isolation and the lack of privacy in a small group affects social aspects of would-be explorers.”

“The site was chosen based on its relative remoteness and its similarities to terrain on Mars. The red planet has large, gently sloping shield volcanoes with exposed lava flows that are geologic cousins to Mauna Loa.”

Lava tubes in Hawaii could be a dress rehearsal for Mars colonies

“There, mission crew members navigate uneven volcanic terrain and endure the physical constraints of performing research in a hostile environment. Wearing bulky suits like those required for extraterrestrial exploration, the scientists study the geology and organisms found in lava tunnels and caverns at Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano.”

“Located approximately 8,200 feet above sea level, the HI-SEAS habitat is a 1,200 square foot dome located on a Mars-like site along the Mauna Loa mountain range on Hawaii Island. HI-SEAS has been the home to five successful long-duration (4 to 12 month) NASA Mars simulation missions.”
