Many people seem to treat certain non-human animals’ having had a good life as a sufficient justification for killing them for food. Yet, in the case of humans or dogs, we generally regard a good life as something we ought to preserve, not bring to an end. Of course, animals raised in higher welfare systems have better lives than those confined in factory farms, and that’s morally preferable. But I fail to see how having a good or better life suddenly becomes a reason to kill rather than a reason to preserve that life. If anything, it seems to support the opposite conclusion.
