Footnotes

1 - Talih Kuşu (Bird of Fortune): The Bird of Fortune is the subject of a Turkish idiomatic expression about good fortune. The full version of the idiom is “Başına talih kuşu kondu” (A bird of fortune perched on your head.).

2 - Tespih çekmek (Counting beads): “Tespih” refers to prayer beads. It is used to keep count while saying prayers.

3 - Gülü seven dikenine katlanır (There’s no rose without a thorn): This proverb has exactly the same meaning as its English counterpart, but its literal translation is a bit different: “If one loves the rose, one tolerates its thorns.”
