Repairing a Wall with a Heartbreaking Story | Plastering Masterclass
In today's video, I’m helping a father named Robert with a repair that hits close to home. Robert reached out after his six-year-old daughter, who is severely autistic and non-verbal, unfortunately, caused a hole in their wall during a self-harming episode. As a parent, my heart goes out to this family, and I wanted to make sure this repair was done right and as quickly as possible to help keep their home safe.
I’ll walk you through the entire process of **filling a hole with bonding** and achieving a professional, seamless finish in record time.
### 🛠️ What You’ll Learn in This Video:
* **Preparation is Key:** Why we remove weak parts and use **SPR** (suction control) on high-suction backgrounds like thermalite blocks before starting.
* **Using Bonding Coat:** How to properly apply a bonding coat—like **Volden quick dry bonding**—behind the plasterboard to provide solid support and prevent future movement.
* **The Secret to Speed:** Using **"Half Time" plaster accelerator** to turn a 3-hour job into a 1-hour job.
* **Preventing Cracks:** Why **scrimming the joints** is a step you should never skip.
* **The "Invisible" Finish:** My technique for **feathering out the plaster** so the patch is completely invisible once painted.
### ⏱️ Video Highlights:
* **0:00** - The heartbreaking story behind this repair.
* **1:15** - Prepping the hole & applying SPR.
* **2:40** - Mixing & "squidging" the bonding coat behind the board.
* **3:50** - Avoiding the "bulge": The correct way to take off plaster.
* **4:30** - Adding the accelerator & applying scrim tape.
* **7:15** - Blending and rehydrating the edges for a smooth transition.
* **9:20** - Why feathering is better than just filling the hole.
* **11:45** - The final result & when you can start painting.
### 📝 Key Tips from the Trowel:
* **Don't over-mix:** When using accelerators, work fast! I’d rather get it on the wall slightly wet than have it set in the bucket.
* **Avoid the "Seesaw":** A good patch should be flat. If you can push the top and bottom and it rocks like a seesaw, it's not right.
* **Painting:** Once the dark patches from the accelerator are gone and it turns a light peachy/ivory color, use **matte paint** for your first coat to avoid peeling.
It’s important to be kind because you never know what someone else is going through. I hope this tutorial helps you with your own home repairs!
