I'm unbearably hype for #donkeykongbananza to where this was worth putting on in 90F weather...
Story time! As with my other projects like Shanty Raid (2016) I've been super excited to work on arranging any music from the Donkey Kong Country series' as its one of the first games I played! Fast forward to 2020 and I had the most surreal experience playing with MES at MAGFest with, you guessed it, the composer David Wise himself! Fast forward to this year, and by the greatest coincidence David and composer of DK64 Grant Kirkhope were guests near home and invited myself and longtime buddy Insaneintherain to jam on a few tracks of theirs! This was obviously a huge surprise, incredibly fun and humbling for both us as fans of their works and one of the jams motivated me to put this one together!
Musically I wanted to distinctly arrange the classic DK Isle Swing theme to work for a 4-piece band (much like Prog Experience!) while still featuring more modern rock/metal production ideas. Taking heavily from songs like Joe Satriani's "Satch Boogie" in the first phase and more 80s shreddy tunes, I jumped between a lot of fun hard stops and moments where a performer might solo - similar to how our jam was arranged! During the chiller second-half, I thought to include more ambience, clean-guitar delays, and the modern prog style I traditionally write in! Sort of a fun way to blend classic and new, which is pretty on point with a new Donkey Kong game on the horizon!
I don't normally have this much to gush about with an arrangement or video, but I'm just delighted to do more music from this franchise! Donkey Kong is adventurous, charming and fun, and sometimes challenging as is its music and that's made me a lifelong fan 🐵
