But if you do want to change your accent, or improve your pronunciation, how do you do it?
Recently I had the pleasure of talking to someone with expert answers to that question: Erik Singer, a dialect coach who helps film and television actors to speak with an accent that is not their native accent, and because of this he knows exactly what it takes mentally and physically to change the way you speak.
In this interview we talk about how to change your accent, the best ways to practice, but more importantly if and why you should try to ‘speak like a native’.

2022. It’s a new year. A moment to start fresh. Clean slate.
Maybe you are new to learning English.
Maybe you have tried and failed many times.
But if you’re watching this video it’s because you have a genuine desire to succeed at learning English.
But the truth is that you probably won’t. Because you have one thing in common with most other people: you are the victim of a system. A system that begins at primary school, continues through high school, and then into adulthood. And what is this system?
The education system.
And in this video I’m going to explain why you’re a victim, and how to break free and really succeed at learning a language.

I know exactly how this feels! In fact this is why language is so exciting to me, because it is so big, and so complicated and just deeply human.
I have spent the past 10 years in the classroom trying to motivate students to do 1 simple thing, and it’s the trick to learning everyday English. Let’s get started.

Shana Poplack and her sociolinguistics laboratory at the University of Ottawa are known as the mythbusters, because they destroy damaging myths about language and language change.
They don’t look at language in its ideal state: they look at how language is used every day by real people, and the discoveries they make are often controversial, and fly in the face of deeply-held beliefs, but their discoveries are always based in truth.

This is what happened last time I read the whole dictionary: youtu.be/5OP6EnwNIkI
*****
If you know me and my channel then you know that I am always talking about the power of education and the power it has to change lives. Research shows that education improves the lives of individuals and society as a whole in every possible way.
But unfortunately there are still millions of children all over the world who still have no access to education. But I think that we can do a little something to help.
This Sunday 4th October at 10am which is World Teachers’ Day, I will sit down live on YouTube and read every single word in the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate dictionary. But why?
I’ve teamed up with the charity Pencils of Promise who build schools in some of the poorest countries in the world, and if we raise $50,000 we can build a school, with classrooms, and toilets, and teachers. And Merriam-Webster will donate a reference suite of dictionaries to the new school.
There are three reasons I have chosen to work with Pencils of Promise:
100% of your donation goes to the project
100% local leadership
100% operational integrity
So on Sunday while I’m reading the dictionary I will ask you to give generously, and help to change lives.

HOW do we study English well?
HOW do we learn a language?

But recently I spoke to Ellen Jovin who’s been writing professionally and teaching professionals how to write for more than 20 years, and in this interview you’ll discover that good business writing isn’t about language, it’s about people.
Ellen demonstrates how to turn basic English into business English for emails, proposal, or presentations with simple tips that focus on the human being at the other end.

One person who knows the reality of English as a global language is Heather Hansen.
She teaches professionals from the world’s biggest companies how to communicate in English all over the world.
And the secret to successful global communication? It isn’t about being like a native speaker, or having an RP accent, or using ‘standard’ English.
This is a powerful interview and I hope it makes teachers and students all over the world question their assumptions about what it means to learn and use English.
