The Summer Platform was designed as the largest pop-up platform in Latvia for culture, leisure and educational events. It is an experimental pilot project that provided an epidemiologically safe environment with the opportunity to distance oneself, socialize and attend public events in the context of the limited gathering of Covid-19 in the summer of 2021.
The shape of the summer platform is made with reference to the adjacent historic Hanzas Perons building with a distinctly long volume and a gable roof. It is organized on several levels and built as an open and light structure from rented scaffolding constructions with timber finishing. The universal structure allows to adapt the object to various events, providing the possibility to supplement it with functional and artistic elements, light and sound techniques. At the same time, it is a sustainable short-term architectural solution that allows the structure to be dismantled after the end of the summer and all materials to be reused for other purposes. The structure is deliberately designed to be visually light and airy to be an inviting place to visit.
There are five areas in the plot: a lounge area, a dining area, a picnic area, a bar and a stage. The lounge area is located under the scaffolding structure and hammocks for leisurely rest are installed here. The dining area is located on a two-level platform next to the bar, but can also be extended in the picnic area if necessary. The bar is a separate structure and both the bar and dining area have ramps for accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The stage is located next to the picnic area, which also serves as a place for spectators, and the stage has a transparent roof made of polycarbonate to protect against rain. The Summer Platform is separated from the nearby Pulkveza Brieza Street by wind shields, which create an environment where it is pleasant to stay in different weather conditions.
