In some past experiments I made "water dance to music" by pounding sound waves into water and reading the resulting waves, and also by directly electrolysing the water with an amped up audio signal. This time I decided it was high time I made the water "sing".
To produce sounds we simply need an oscillator, specifically one that operates on a frequency within the range of human hearing.
This one seems to be going at a good few revolutions per second(maybe more than 10), and their are 30 holes, so I would say the frequency is in the 100s of Hertz range off the top of my head. I will have to get an oscilloscope to check for sure.
The disc spins and opens and closes the tube, which contains one of the contacts.
The electric current pulses because the passing of electricity is blocked by chemical reactions and by-products of the electrolysis.
The result is that because the passage of electricity becomes dependant on the diffusion of water, we can effectively treat the water as "carrying" the electricity.
This means electricity can be "slowed down" and brought into a much more easy to manipulate form. LOADS OF FUN :D
I like to call this little guy the AEIOU (Aqua Electric Ionic Oscillator)
