Hey guys! A while back I posted a tutorial for a macraweave design that incorporated columns of square knots. Today we are going to change it up a bit and create design that uses the spiral knot (also referred to as the half square knot). Cut one piece of 3mm string in the colours terracotta red, vintage peach, mustard and vintage green, each piece is 8 ft long. Cut 2 pieces of 4mm natural rope, each piece is 3 ft in length. Set aside for now. Cut 6 pieces of 4mm natural rope, each piece is 6 ft in length. Fold each piece in half and attach to your dowel using Lark’s Head knots.
Grab one 3 ft piece of natural rope and tie a row of double half hitch knots along the top of your work.
Either tuck the ends of the filler cord into the knots at the back of your work or cut off the excess on the sides of your work. If you’re worried that the knots will come undone I like to add a dab of glue in between the last two half hitches before cutting the filler cord to keep it a bit more secure.
Grab the terracotta red string, fold it in half to find the centre and then tie a column of spiral knots (half square knots) around 3 filler cords. I’ll tie enough knots here so that the column is about 4 inches long but feel free to make your column longer or shorter.
Repeat this process with the other 3 colours of string. I wanted my columns to start and end at different points so the 2nd and 4th columns I started a little bit further up my filler cords and ended then a bit sooner than the 1st and 3rd columns.
Tuck the ends into the back of the spiral knots as I’ll do here and then cut off the excess string.
Finish it off by tying one final row of double half hitch knots underneath the columns. This design is really easy to adjust the size - add more rope and create more columns to make it wider and tie more knots along your columns to make it longer. Thanks so much for watching!
