In this video, I will show you how I designed a portable high-resolution thermal imaging camera using the MLX90640 far-infrared thermal sensor and an ESP32-based PCB board. The device is battery-operated, compact, and can display live thermal images directly on a smartphone or computer through a Wi-Fi webserver.
The MLX90640 is a far-infrared thermal image array sensor with a 32 ร 24 pixel resolution, providing a total of 768 individual temperature measurement points. These temperature values are processed by the ESP32 as an infrared temperature matrix and converted into a smooth thermal heatmap for real-time visualization.
Unlike simple temperature sensors, this project generates a full thermal image that can be used to detect heat patterns from objects, human presence, electronic components, and surrounding temperature changes. The web interface includes enhanced thermal image processing features such as bilinear interpolation, color palette mapping, frame smoothing, contrast enhancement, and hot/cold temperature markers.
The webpage also displays useful real-time temperature values, including minimum temperature, maximum temperature, average temperature, and center temperature. Since the ESP32 hosts its own webserver, the thermal image can be viewed wirelessly from a phone or laptop by connecting to the ESP32 Wi-Fi network.
This project is useful for DIY thermal imaging, electronics troubleshooting, heat detection, temperature monitoring, and IoT-based infrared visualization.
