Our mission at ProPublica remains steadfast: to expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust. Our teams collect data, evidence, anecdotes and input to fuel important accountability-focused journalism. One way we do this is through data and social science — devising new methods for collecting, processing and analyzing complex information, then making it accessible through groundbreaking visuals and news apps.
Focusing on the data undeniably quantifies problems that were previously anecdotal. But how do journalists find important stories hidden in numbers? And what role does the public play in developing these complex investigations? How do our journalists build relationships with the communities we want to cover, particularly those who do not know us or trust us yet?
