The City of Cape Town has announced an R8 billion deal to buy solar power from independent power producers over the next 20 years.

The city says the deal will reduce the city's reliance on Eskom and secure more affordable electricity rates for residents.

We speak to the Acting CEO of the South African National Energy Development Institute, Professor Prathaban Moodley, about the maturity of South Africa's solar energy sector and whether this level of dependence on solar power is sustainable.
