I've read quite a few classics, but reading Pamela was a different experience altogether. Written by Samuel Richardson and first published in 1740, it was far from any other novel I've read. Why is that? Because Pamela is quite unique in that it is widely considered to be the FIRST English novel. Not only the first novel, but the first bestseller even. Doesn't that sound intriguing? I thought so, too!
To a modern audience, Pamela is most certainly full of strangeness - just like many other older novels/stories. Don't worry if you haven't read it, I will be giving a detailed plot summary before getting into the discussion.
