Let's talk about the Asturian language.
1. Asturian language
Asturian (asturianu), also called bable, is a Romance language of the Astur-Leonese group spoken in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. It descends from the Latin of the old Kingdom of Asturias and is closely related to Leonese and to Mirandese (spoken in Portugal). Estimates vary, but it is commonly cited as having around 100,000 native speakers and roughly 450,000 second-language speakers, though some surveys put the total number who speak it considerably higher; UNESCO classifies it as endangered. It is not a co-official language of Spain but holds protected status within Asturias, with its own standardizing body, the Academia de la Llingua Asturiana, and an active literary and revival movement; it varies across western, central, and eastern dialects. Many people speak it alongside Castilian Spanish, frequently blending the two in a mixed register known as amestáu. The language gives Asturian identity much of its distinctive vocabulary — words like llingua, gaita, sidra, and fabada that recur throughout the region's culture.
