All cells have membranes to protect them or else they fall apart. But you can weaken and damage membranes around cells, including brain cells, with microwave radiation. This ability to injure brain cells was discovered decades ago by scientists tasked by the Office of Naval Research to study the effects of radiofrequency radiation used in radars. The results demonstrating harms to humans were quickly dismissed as the military proceeded to build its arsenal.
When U.S. diplomats recently began reporting symptoms — now widely known as "Havana Syndrome" — the symptoms sounded a lot like the effects of microwave radiation. Unsurprisingly, it was only a matter of time before the "wargaming" around the reports began to mimic efforts to discredit the scientists who had studied RFR for the military and later had reported similar results in research undertaken for the telecom industry in the early days of cell phones.

In 1993, fewer than 1 percent of Americans had a cell phone. By 2008, 137 million Americans had one (in 2020, smartphone vendors sold around 1.38 billion smartphones worldwide). In the early 2000s, Adlkofer, who had previously worked for the tobacco industry and was known for spinning the data on Big Tobacco's behalf, was hired to run a major research program on the effects of wireless radiation. Adlkofer found many alarming results.
Skeptical of Adlkofer when she interviewed him in Vienna and later in Brazil, Davis nonetheless extracted from him the harrowing story of how the techniques used by Big Tobacco were then turned against him by Big Telecom. False claims of forged data threatened to discredit Adlkofer, his research project, and the team of scientists that had found the disturbing results on the effects of wireless radiation.
