Belgian composer/ambient/experimental sonic manipulator, & multi instrumentalist, Dirk Serries will be joining me on September 9th, 2026 @ 2:00 PM EST (8:00 PM GMT + 2).
Per Dirk's website, I will let him describe his work/mission a bit so as to not overly confuse you with my own biases just yet:
"I’m an experimental sound artist, active since 1984 with music on the border between avant-garde, industrial, experimental, and ambient for more than 35 years. I established a large discography with solo releases, albums under my pseudonyms and alter-ego’s VIDNA OBMANA, FEAR FALLS BURNING and the MICROPHONICS series while collaborating with international acclaimed musicians such as Steven Wilson (as Continuum), Justin K. Broadrick (as Loud As Giants), Cult Of Luna, Steve Roach, and I have toured extensively as support of bands/projects such as, Jesu, MONO, Low, My Bloody Valentine, and Cult Of Luna.
As for myself (Gas Masks), I personally became aware of a Dirk's massive volume of work (it was substantial back then, but pales in comparison to present times) through my friendship/association with Steven Wilson, Steven guested on some of Dirk's seminal Relapse era Dante Trilogy works, and then the pair formed a spectral dark ambient/metallic drone project called Continuum, which released 2 full lengths (and 2 remix/recycled albums, that I believe were vinyl exclusives only) which are some of my favorite works from that era of their experimentations together.
Dirk, as project alter-egos Vidna Obmana/Fear Falls Burning/Microphonics, or in collaborations with artists such as Justin Broadrick, Steven Wilson, Asmus Tietchens, Steve Roach, Nadja (Aiden Baker), Martina Verhoeven, to name just a very few, or as himself Dirk Serries, has nearly 400 releases that he has been associated with on Discogs... I would wager a bet that is not remotely a complete list though... Just imagine that ! There is no possible way we will touch on everything he has recorded (I would truly need a year of daily interviews to accomplish this, and even then I doubt we could possibly touch on all of it), to say Dirk is prolific would be a massive understatement to be fair, but we will get his origin story and dig into some of the more significant works he's done, from his standpoint as well as mine.
Also, need to point out Dirk does mixing and mastering work at his personal studio in addition to all of the recording and touring commitments he regularly undertakes.
So while this isn't a metal band/artist interview, it will be a fascinating glimpse into an uncompromising experimental artist's origin story and body of work, so I am hoping people will give this interview a lot of love in the end !!
