Dutch composer Dirk Schäfer wrote four violin sonatas, two of these were published by Noske in The Netherlands. Famous Hungarian violinist Carl Flesch wrote: 'The two violin sonatas by Dirk Schäfer are in my opinion among the best works in this field to have appeared in the past twenty years.' This particular violin sonata Op. 6 was not among the two mentioned by Flesch, but the fact that it was published by the renowned house of Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig does give some indication of its quality.

This violin sonata is a true dialogue, an eloquent conversation between the two instruments. Now it is the violin, then the piano taking the ead in a strongly rhetorical discourse, extending over four movements. The final movement with its changing moods brings the work to an impassioned close.

Schäfer dedicated this sonata to Bram Eldering, Schäfer's predecessor at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Not long after the publication of Schäfer's sonata, Eldering left Amsterdam for Cologne, to teach at the very conservatory where Schäfer had received much of his musical education.

The violin Sonata is dedicated "An Bram Eldering".
