Holding a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in physics from UC Berkeley, Martinis discusses the transformational physics of information processed at increasingly high speeds and the experimental realization of quantum supremacy. From 2014–2020, Martinis oversaw a team of skilled engineers and physicists working at Google to build the first practical quantum computer.
Now at Silicon Quantum Computing, Martinis addresses background radiation in quantum computing by channeling converted energy away from qubits. He was awarded the seventh biennial John Stewart Bell Prize for research on fundamental issues in quantum mechanics and their applications in May 2021, highlighting his innovations in the design and control of superconducting devices.
