By early 1985, Ronnie James Dio had seemingly proven everything he needed to prove. He had helped reinvent Black Sabbath, walked away, bet everything on himself, and within less than two years released Holy Diver and The Last in Line.

But had Dio really escaped the shadow of Black Sabbath?

In this episode, we go back to a fascinating 1985 interview that captures Dio at a pivotal moment in his career. He openly admits that he brings up Black Sabbath as a “defensive gesture,” while insisting that fans now see him as the singer of Dio rather than the former singer of Sabbath. Yet at the same time, he describes some of his own new music as “Sabbath-esque.”

We’ll look at why Dio deliberately escaped to Colorado’s legendary Caribou Ranch to record The Last in Line, why Warner Bros. reportedly wanted Van Halen producer Ted Templeman involved, and why Dio was determined to produce the album himself.

We’ll also dig into Dio’s surprising dislike of “Mystery” and “Rainbow in the Dark,” his fear that fans might accuse him of selling out, and the complicated reality behind his insistence that Dio was truly a band rather than simply a solo project.

But some of the most revealing moments have nothing to do with the music. Dio talks candidly about age, money, publishing royalties, the sacrifices required for success, his surprisingly ordinary life away from the stage, and the insecurity about his 5'4" height that ultimately helped him develop a larger-than-life presence.

Looking back more than 40 years later, this interview gives us something more interesting than another Dio success story. It gives us a glimpse of a man who had finally proven he could stand on his own—but who was still figuring out what it meant to leave Black Sabbath behind.
