Bob DeWaay and Jessica Kramasz examine and refute Dutch Sheets’s synergistic view of Romans 8:26-28. Sheets uses that passage to claim that we must allow the Holy Spirit “to be all that He is meant to be in us,” and that all things don’t work together for our good unless we do our part. It is his belief that the intercession of the Holy Spirit in that passage includes believers praying in tongues, which allows the Holy Spirit to pray through us. Bob shows that the groanings of the Holy Spirit are redemptive on our behalf; they are not contingent upon us, and this cannot refer to tongues since tongues are spoken words. The Holy Spirit knows what we don’t know, and He intercedes for us according to the will of God. We must reject Sheets’s teaching, which diminishes the power and authority of the Holy Spirit.
