This conversation was based on a Playboy interview with Marshall McLuhan from 1969: https://web.cs.ucdavis.edu/~rogaway/classes/188/spring07/mcluhan.pdf
In this conversation, I discuss with David McKerracher and Ann Snelgrove of Theory Underground, their upcoming course Digital Literacy and Critical Media Theory through an interview with Marshall McLuhan from 1969 which explores McLuhan's foundational role in introducing media theory. Without a foundation in McLuhan's basic introduction to media theory we cannot hope to engage philosophical thought on what it means to be digitally literate and critical about media today. Moreover, McLuhan's ideas appear prophetic in the context of our current media ecology. His emphasis on the mediums of media significantly disrupting our sensory balance, and dramatically transforming the way we interpret the content of our world, have as much relevance, if not more relevance today, than they did when he first rose to intellectual prominence in the 1960s. Throughout the dialogue, we focus on concepts like the Global Village, the evolution of technology, the problem of defining constraints, and the metaphor of electronic media or the internet specifically as a type of atomic bomb forcing us into a brave new world. This has major consequences for the future of our lives and projects, and thus makes it necessary to engage deep and extended reflections on our day-to-day relationship with digital media.
