While the UK government has backtracked on its intended compulsory ID card scheme since this debate was filmed, it has not been dropped entirely and many of the arguments discussed in this session remain pertinent and worth considering. The two speakers on this panel are key proponents for and against digital ID cards.
Are the concerns with digital ID overblown? Is it worth the risks of a surveillance society if fraud and serious crime can be curbed using such measures? Could digital ID ‘stop the boats’ of illegal migrants? What is the right balance between privacy and freedom on the one hand and safety and convenience on the other?
