Didius Julianus was a Roman statesman raised by the same mother as Marcus Aurelius, one of the wisest emperors in history. He governed many provinces, he repelled Rome’s enemies and by the time he was nearing 60, he was looking at a comfortable retirement. But all was not well in Rome, you see after the death of the tyrant Commodus the empire was in disarray as men scrapped for power. But now the Praetorian Guard offered a peaceful solution: they were going to sell the position of emperor to the highest bidder. So Didius Julianus put aside his life savings to take up the throne and do his duty for the people of Rome, he even pardoned the man who lost the bid and kept him on as part of his government! But for some reason everybody hated him and general Septimus Severus rebelled and everybody deserted poor Didius. The only Roman emperor to start a dynasty without conquest, and the Senate voted to erase him from history.
