Think your last name isn’t Irish? Irish surnames are far more complicated than O’, Mc and Mac. Centuries of anglicisation, migration, Norman settlement and language suppression changed the way many Irish family names look today.

From Ó Súilleabháin and Ó Gallchobhair to de Búrca and Breathnach, Irish surnames preserve centuries of Irish history, even when the modern spelling no longer looks particularly Irish.
