This Independence Day, India’s National Song, Vande Mataram, will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi for the first time, before the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, as per a protocol issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This year also marks 150 years of Vande Mataram.

While the adopted version traditionally included only its first two stanzas, the Centre’s new guidelines specify a rendition covering all six stanzas. This comes months after the Parliament debate over the National Song. Here’s what Parliamentarians said about what “Vande Mataram”means.
