"Could a remote island in the South Pacific hold a lost clue to one of the Maya civilization’s greatest mysteries? Archaeologist Jim Turner journeys 400 miles off the coast of Chile to investigate a massive rock formation he believes was carved by the ancient Maya—and deliberately aligned with the celestial events surrounding the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar in 2012.
Following clues from the Dresden Codex, Mayan astronomy, Palenque, King Pakal and Chan Bahlum, Turner investigates a mysterious 150-foot monument resembling the Mayan sun god and jaguar. His expedition examines whether ancient Maya mariners could have crossed thousands of miles of open ocean, why they tracked Venus and solar eclipses with extraordinary precision, and whether the island could even conceal the lost tomb of a Mayan king.
As Turner and adventurer Jeff Salz battle rough seas, dangerous terrain and a sheer volcanic climb, they attempt to reach the monument's summit and determine whether its astronomical alignment was coincidence—or evidence of an extraordinary ancient discovery.
