This video examines one of the biggest questions surrounding the New Testament: Were the Gospels actually based on eyewitness testimony?
Ancient Greek and Roman literature contains countless stories of miraculous healings, divine appearances, resurrections, and ascensions supposedly confirmed by eyewitnesses. From Vespasian and Alexander the Great to Asclepius, Augustus, Romulus, and Apollonius, ancient authors repeatedly used eyewitnesses to give extraordinary stories an appearance of historical credibility.
But what happens when we apply the same historical skepticism to the Gospels?
This episode explores the traditional authorship of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the claims associated with Papias, Paul's Corinthian Creed, the mysterious "disciple whom Jesus loved," and the anonymous eyewitnesses supposedly behind Gospel traditions.
Were these witnesses real? Were they reliable? Or were eyewitnesses sometimes simply a literary device used to make extraordinary stories seem authentic?
The video also examines an apparent double standard in New Testament scholarship: why are miraculous eyewitness accounts surrounding pagan and Roman figures often dismissed as legendary, while similar claims surrounding Jesus receive much more extensive historical defense?
If ancient writers could invent witnesses to support miracles, can we automatically trust the eyewitness claims associated with the Gospels?
