Did Saruman think he was the hero of The Lord of the Rings? Saruman was sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron, but by the time we meet him, he has become almost everything he was meant to resist.
Saruman was one of the Istari: a Maia sent from the West to guide and encourage the Free Peoples against Sauron. He was the White Wizard, chief of the order, and head of the White Council. Yet his story becomes one of pride, jealousy, self-deception, and domination.
So did Saruman know he had fallen? Or did he convince himself that he was the only one wise enough, realistic enough, and powerful enough to save Middle-earth?
