In the 12th century, the Middle East was a battleground for two of the world’s dominant religions: Islam and Christianity. Having established various states, the Crusaders became a fixture in the region’s geopolitical scene. The 1180s saw the rise of a Muslim figure that very nearly brought about the end of the Crusader states: Saladin. With the Crusaders on the brink of destruction, Western European leaders began a Third Crusade to reclaim the Holy Land.
