When Christianity was adopted as the State Religion, such ideas were dismissed as they conflicted with the absolute authority of the Roman Emperor and were considered to be the cause of "discord" among the citizens of the Roman Empire, so Amillennialsim and "spiritualization" of Scripture were "cooked-up" for the Catholic Church and then adopted by the Protestant "Reformers".
