In Genesis 2:17 God makes a rule and tells Adam if he breaks this rule he will surely die. This is Adam's first day... how could he know what death is?
This question assumes God created Adam but did not give him knowledge. That's doesn't make sense. God created Adam with intelligence and knowledge. For example, Adam named all the animals. While Adam had not experienced death, there is no reason to assume he didn't understand what God was saying.
