London, Thursday 23 June. It was finally happening. National Railway strikes were holding the country in its grasp. But the atmosphere in the city felt calm and serene. I chose to take the last part of my journey to the O2 arena by boat. I had done this 15 years ago with my mom, when we went to see Barbra Streisand perform at the former Millenium Dome.
On my way into London, I had passed Wembley Arena, Diana’s traditional London venue of many years. I saw her there once, in 2007.
Memories of previous shows came flooding back. The Ahoy in Rotterdam in 2004, the very first time I saw Diana in concert. Hamburg 2005, Wembley & Ahoy 2007, the two Symphonica in Rosso shows in The Netherlands in 2009.
Favourite songs and the excitement of hearing them on the radio, or playing them over and over again on my cassette player during my high school years back in the early 80s.
I love the reflective mood you get in when you know it’s about to happen again. Being in touch with friends who cannot be present, but who share the same love for Diana. Reuniting with fans at the venue, and recalling special moments during shows you saw together. Hearing the latest inside news ‘Her children and grandchildren are here, they’ll be sitting at that special row at the front.’
Getting to know your neighbours in the front row, who had never seen Diana perform before. But who grew up with her music. I loved every moment of this evening. Diana connects people, and she connects with her fans in the most heartwarming way.
This is a montage of moments I filmed on my way to, and during the show. I never did this before, knowing there would always be fans capturing moments I could enjoy later on. I wanted to be as present with Diana as I could. An evening to cherish forever.
