This is the only Tramsquare Crossing in Japan, referred to as a Diamond Crossing since the tram and train lines cross each other in a somewhat diamond-like shape. There used to be other tram square crossings in Japan, but they have since been grade-separated. This is an interesting example of a Tramsquare with the tram and train operator (Iyotetsu) being the same company, so they operate all services over this crossing.

Comparing this to a tram square in Melbourne (Australia), where I am from, they work quite differently. Melbourne tram squares have a signal box by them to monitor the crossing, and the signaler changes the overhead over the crossing between our 600V trams and 1500V trains.

I visited this city just to film this level crossing, over the last couple years I had slowly started doing research on this crossing after I first found out about it a few years ago, I managed to pinpoint it on a map and promised to myself If I were to ever visit Japan, I must go and film it. When the time came around that I had the opportunity in November last year, I took that to my advantage and went on a Solo Adventure around Southern Japan. I checked out Teardrop crossings around Kumamoto, then travelled to Hiroshima to see ground 0, then I caught a ferry across to Matsuyama here where we see the Tramsquare Level Crossing. Following the visit here, I also went to Yokkaichi and filmed some cylinder bells. It was an amazing adventure around a foreign country to me, where I got to explore various environments.
