Canadian pianist Marnie Laird, praised as "…a technically immaculate, probing and authoritative protagonist" (The Miami Herald), enjoys an active career as a collaborative pianist, chamber musician, and soloist. Prior to founding Brooklyn Duo and Brooklyn Classical, Marnie spent three years as principal pianist of the New World Symphony in Miami under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. In high demand as a pianist in New York City, she worked with several opera companies, including the Gotham Chamber Opera, and was also on staff as a collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School after graduating. Recent performances have taken her to Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Merkin Hall.

Originally from Vancouver, BC, Marnie has been the recipient of numerous Canadian awards, including top prizes from the Canadian Music Competitions, Canadian Music Teachers' Association, and the BC Arts Council. Most notably she was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest mark in Canada on the A.R.C.T. piano performance exams. She made her solo orchestral debut at age 13 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and has participated in the Tanglewood, Music Academy of the West, Kneisel Hall, and Banff summer festivals.

Marnie received her Master’s degree in collaborative piano from The Juilliard School, where she was the recipient of a full scholarship as well as the Orchestral Piano Fellowship. She also has a Master’s in solo piano performance from The University of British Columbia. Her principal teachers include Lorraine Ambrose, Robin Wood, Jane Coop, Jonathan Feldman, and Margo Garrett.

Marnie's Bio:

Canadian pianist Marnie Laird, praised as "…a technically immaculate, probing and authoritative protagonist" (The Miami Herald), enjoys an active career as a collaborative pianist, chamber musician, and soloist. Prior to founding Brooklyn Duo and Brooklyn Classical, Marnie spent three years as principal pianist of the New World Symphony in Miami under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. In high demand as a pianist in New York City, she worked with several opera companies, including the Gotham Chamber Opera, and was also on staff as a collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School after graduating. Recent performances have taken her to Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Merkin Hall.

Originally from Vancouver, BC, Marnie has been the recipient of numerous Canadian awards, including top prizes from the Canadian Music Competitions, Canadian Music Teachers' Association, and the BC Arts Council. Most notably she was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest mark in Canada on the A.R.C.T. piano performance exams. She made her solo orchestral debut at age 13 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and has participated in the Tanglewood, Music Academy of the West, Kneisel Hall, and Banff summer festivals.

Marnie received her Master’s degree in collaborative piano from The Juilliard School, where she was the recipient of a full scholarship as well as the Orchestral Piano Fellowship. She also has a Master’s in solo piano performance from The University of British Columbia. Her principal teachers include Lorraine Ambrose, Robin Wood, Jane Coop, Jonathan Feldman, and Margo Garrett.

🗣️⚠️ ‼️ ATTENTION PEOPLE, THIS IS OUR FIRST BSB COVER EVER ‼️(BSB=Backstreet Boys, obviously, and if you didn’t know that then you should probably keep it to yourself because that’s embarrassing! 😘) But seriously this is big news. Tell me why-y we waited so long to cover this epic late 90s boy band pop ballad?! We’re idiots!
The reason we actually finally recorded this song (because it’s always been on our list) is because my (Marnie’s) sister Ali requested it for her wedding last week! 💕💕👰‍♀️🤵‍♂️😭🙌 She has the best sense of humor and thought it would be hilarious for guests to hear those sweet, instantly recognizable first notes and imagine the opening lyrics “You are my fire, my one desire…” as she walked down the aisle. She kept the music choice a secret from all her friends and when we started playing, we got a hearty laugh from all the guests. It was perfection! (She also began her vows with “Jay…you are my fire. And my one desire,” which was met with even more lols.) All this to say, we highly recommend this as a wedding processional!
A little more of our history with BSB. My sister and I were obsessed with them in high school. (I think I was voted most likely to marry one of them in some kind of class poll??) They were my first big concert. They were always our first love, ahead of *NSYNC. So we wanted this video to be perfect! My sis and I were adamant that Patrick incorporate some kind of chair dance into it (famously from the “As Long As You Love Me” video but whatever)
but he claimed he “couldn’t” 🙄🙄🙄- the end of this video is the best we could get out of him. Of course I had to include a patented Howie wink 😉 during his solo (although mine wasn’t quite as quick and effortless as his always were!) And obviously we had to wear the famous all white outfits. Anyway, we hope you love it! Recording it made me so so so happy! Play it at your own weddings!

When we decided we wanted to add a bunch of percussion, we just went around the studio and searched for as many things that could make noise as possible, and this is what we came up with. (We found the toaster in the basement storage room of the building, so thank you to whatever former tenant left it there!) The drill was probably our favorite sound. What was yours?!

Hey guys! We Don’t Talk About Bruno is our 4-year-old daughter’s favourite song these days and has been on repeat in our house and car for weeks. (We’re sure parents everywhere can relate - it’s nice that the song is amazing and that we love it too!) So anyway, we made this version for her. Hey guys! We hope you’ve been enjoying all the video releases from our recording project with the Dover Quartet. This was the first song we recorded (of 18) during our 10-day shoot…we were so excited to be playing together again! 🙌 We were figuring out shooting angles in the new studio as well as working with a new videographer (thank you, Casey!) and we definitely learned a lot from this first shoot. One is, make sure there’s enough space to capture the whole group in the shot! 🤣 Hopefully the energy in the music still comes through- we had a blast playing it! What can we say about this piece? 😍 Composed by John Williams for the movie Schindler’s List in 1994, it instantly became one of the most memorable and recognizable movie themes ever written. The music is gorgeous. And we are so grateful to the expert musicians from the Dover Quartet for helping us bring this arrangement to life. We wanted to give each player in the quartet a time to shine with a solo, and shine they did! They are all so darn amazing.

Patrick was a bit of a metal head in high school, and he went to many a Metallica concert as a kid. Hi guys! We're so excited to finally start releasing the rest of our project with the Dover Quartet! We recorded this, along with 7 other songs, back in March at our new studio. We're releasing them all on an album called "Chamber Music", out everywhere on October 8th! They also recorded a whole classical string quartet album at our studio while they were in town, with a live video for each track. It's been eons since our last video. We hope everyone is staying healthy and hanging in there. If you missed our update in June, it's basically that we: had a baby (duh), bought a new house on the West Coast (mainly to take advantage of major grandparent help from across the border in Vancouver, Canada 😂), the pandemic hit, we moved, aaaaaand... we've been waiting for the border to open ever since!!!!!!! These are such difficult times, but we feel lucky that we've at least been able to spend a lot of time enjoying our kids. We're in the midst of construction on our new recording studio, which was delayed because of Covid, but once that's finished in December we look forward to sharing that new space with you all in our next videos!

A note on this song choice, if anyone is curious why we picked it. We obviously worship Mariah, but we also LOVE Schitt's Creek, which I binge-watched in the early months of breastfeeding Archie at all hours of the day and night. So I weirdly associate Archie with that show, and of course David Rose's favorite singer is Mariah, so... a no brainer! 😄

We’ve been so excited to release this one! We recorded it way back in the summer with our friend Cicely and had so much fun working on it. While she was in town, we also recorded a big project for our Brooklyn Classical channel together! Hey guys! It's just me (Marnie) this time, trying out a new style of video for ya! (Truth be told, we came to this camera angle decision mainly because I didn't feel like doing my hair and makeup...it was glorious! I was a mess from the waist up and loving it!) Actually, I needed all the extra time I could get to practise this cover...It was hard!!!
Full disclosure, this is a cover of Postmodern Jukebox's cover. We're 100% obsessed with Scott Bradlee and his ability to play in so many styles so effortlessly. I wish I could just sit down and improvise fun, jazzy stuff like this but I have NO idea how. 🤷 So, being the nerd that I am, I rewatched PMJ's cover over and over and wrote it all down, just so I could play it. 🤓If anyone else is in the same boat as I am (wants to play jazz/is hopeless at it), feel free to check out our sheet music for this so you can try it for yourself! Hi guys! Sorry for the long wait since our last video. We've been busy recording tons of new stuff and we're excited to share it all with you very soon!
Some of you know that we occasionally play for weddings. As you can imagine, we get a LOT of requests for Canon in D, and we discovered that there were no good arrangements available anywhere for piano and cello! Hard to believe given its popularity. So we decided to make our own! We tried to stick as closely to the original as possible (which was written for three violins and basso continuo), and we performed it *not* at a snail's pace so the bride can actually make it down the aisle without putting everyone to sleep. 🙊(Yeah, we said it! Nobody likes a slow processional!) Also, the number one complaint about this piece from cellists is always how booooring it is to play because they literally have to play the same 8 bass notes over and over for the entire piece. Problem solved with this arrangement because the cello never has to play the bass! 🙌(The piano does, but we get lots of other fun stuff too so it's ok!)
