Dhrupad is the oldest surviving form of Hindustani classical music — a deeply meditative and spiritual art that traces its lineage back to the temples and courts of ancient India. Unlike other styles, Dhrupad is not just music, but a sadhana — a path of devotion and discipline. Its emphasis on purity of notes, majestic aalaap, and structured rhythmic cycles makes it both rigorous and sublime. The Darbhanga gharana, to which Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick and Prashant Mallick belong, is known for its rich vocal ornamentation, dynamic layakari (rhythmic play), and expressive depth.
