I Flew Japans #1 Business Class Airline for 12 Hours ANA The Room Paolo fromTOKYO 2024-10-05 | Business Class Flight Review of ANA The Room featured on their Boeing 777-399ER plane currently flying from Tokyo to 4 cities; Los Angeles, San Francisco, London and New York City. The Rooms are designed in a 1-2-1 configuration, and each room has a lie-flat bed and enclosed for your own privacy and a width of 38 inches (96.5cm) which is actually enough to sit 2 smaller people like Maiko and Wolfy so quite a bit of space for just someone like me. It’s got a 24 inch 4K touch screen which can be paired to your mobile device so you can control the screen from your phone. Also, there is a playstation-like remote control as well. Finally, the seat also offers some goodies in an amenity bag. Also, the center two seats can be used like a twin suite by lowering the center partition, and that’s where Maiko and Wolfy are seated. Wifi is also free as business class as they provided me with a voucher code to enter and connected to the World Wide Web of Life. When the seat is laid flat it’s about 183cm (72inches) in total length which is more than sufficient for me to lie down completely straight. A great 12 hour experience to fly with the family from Tokyo Japan to New York USA. Thank you to ANA for inviting us to fly with them. Day in the Life of a Japanese Construction Worker Paolo fromTOKYO 2024-09-13 | A Day in the Life of a Japanese Construction Worker in Tokyo Japan. This is typical work day in Japan for construction work who operates an Excavator construction vehicle. This is her work hours in Japan as well as her morning routine and after work schedule. Kaori operates various construction vehicles such as bulldozers and backhoes, but her speciality are Yumbos, AKA excavators the Japanese name dating back to the 1960’s when they were first produced and named as such. Ever since then, the name Yumbo has become synonymous with all excavators in Japan. And to operate these construction vehicles specialized licenses in Japan are required in addition to a large-sized vehicle driver’s license if driven on roads, in total Kaori had to test for 4 different licenses in order to do her job. It was only until Kaori’s late 20’s did she find interest in her career, working as an office cleaner, she noticed excavators from her office window dreaming how fun it would be to operate. One day on break, she ran into one of the vehicle operators, who she confessed her dream. The man laughingly told her to get a license. It was to his surprise when she came back some time later with that license in hand…shocked the man could do only one thing, help her get a job at his company. This is one of my go-to Japan summer getaway spots. This beautiful Japanese seaside gem is one of the easiest ways to get away from Tokyo’s hectic pace, and we’re doing this trip like a Typical Japanese Summer Vacation with fireworks, kaiseki style ryokan dining, heavenly seafood, a beach day and onsen hot springs, but of course in our own style. After you step off the train at Atami station, you’re greeted by a lively shopping street packed with restaurants, souvenir shops, and an assortment of street food hitters. And before going to our hotel, we decided to get some lunch at the shopping street. It gets rather busy on weekends so we recommend going on the weekdays to beat the crowds…but since we’re doing the Japanese summer Firework experience, it has to happen on the weekend…and it’s gonna happen with all these people. Our hotel for this trip is actually 2 stations away from Atami station and then a 10 minute walk from when you arrive which was perfect for us as we wanted to have an even quieter and calming Japan countryside experience. Day in the Life of a Japanese Anime Director Paolo fromTOKYO 2024-08-10 | A day in the life of a Japanese Anime Director in Tokyo Japan working in an Anime Production Studio. This is the typical work day in Japan of an anime director from morning his morning routine, daily work activities, all the way to nighttime. The Japanese work culture in an animation production studio is unique on it's own as it requires 200 people to make one episode alone. This average work day in Japan at an anime studio highlights the passion each worker has for their job and how they all work together to create a Japanese anime series. Shu, the anime director, is currently directing an anime called, MAYONAKA PUNCH, meaning Midnight Punch. Working directly for the P.A. works animation studio and the Kadokawa publishing company. On his 2nd series he worked at this studio for about 10 years now. So Shu works as a freelancer, which is rather typical in Japan’s anime industry as they make up almost 70% of its workers. For Shu, this means his work location changes depending on his client projects. Currently, his primary studio though is in Kodaira which allows him to bike to work, but this morning he needs to head directly to the voice recording studio first. Today, the team is recording one episode which is 24 minutes long with the Seiyu voice actors. It takes about 4-5 hours on average but if there’s an issue, it’ll take as long as it needs until they can get it right. This Tokyo hidden gem is located just a 2 minute walk from Tokyo’s ebisu station. This shop is known for its thin crispy crust and its overwhelming amount of Tsubuan, a chunky style of red bean paste, all freshly prepared in-store. On a busy day, the shop sells about 1500 taiyaki. Taiyaki itself dates back to Japan’s meiji period, created mysteriously when a vendor decided one day to take a cylinder-shaped Japanese snack called imagawayaki and shape it in the form a tai fish, red sea bream, an auspicious fish Japan commonly used in celebrations. Back then, red sea bream was quite an expensive fish for regular people, so taiyaki became a popular lucky fortune alternative. In Japan, red bean paste used to be more of a savory food, when monks used it as a substitute for meat. The shift to a sweet, occurred during the Muromachi period as the tea ceremony became popular and Japanese indulged in sweet anko to pair with their tea. In Japan, many salarymen wear it proudly as sign of prestigious especially when working at a large company. We see the employees morning routine, full day at work as well as what he does after work. Masa works at BIG ECHO, a leading Karaoke chain in Japan. In fact, Karaoke and Karaoke boxes are deeply embedded Japanese culture and entertainment, as students sing after school, adults sing during and after drinking parties, and even individual users come here to practice. It’s become a part of everyday Japanese life. This is a typical day working in a Japanese factory from morning until night. The average factory worker in Japan works a set amount of hours ever day as you'll see. Also, in Japanese factories, it’s very common to have more part-time shift workers, than full-time workers. In this egg factory, 80% of the workers are part-time and 20% full-time. Kenta works at Yachiyo Poultry, a well-renowned egg factory in Japan with a proud 95 year history running it’s own farms. In Japan, TAMAGO aka eggs have a place in every meal which is why it’s no surprise that the country ranks as the 2nd highest consumer of eggs globally, each person consuming on average 339 eggs per year. Also, there is quite a lot Japanese work culture that can be seen in this video. First opened more than 149 years ago in 1875, in Kagurazaka, this Japanese unagi eel speciality restaurant passed down it’s culinary techniques 5 generations to perfectly craft their succulently charcoal grilled mouth watering unagi dish dipped in their secret signature sauce which remains unchanged throughout the years. The shop uses a special Kyosui Unagi from the Shizuoka prefecture, raised in the underground water of its Southern alps known for it’s uniquely sweet aroma with five times more DHA & EPA when compared wild eels. Bred in limited quantities, it’s earned it’s name in Japan as the phantom eel. Although eel has been eaten for more than 5000 years, In Japan, the most common way to eat Unagi is by filleting it, skewering it and then grilling which gained popularity during the edo period. Interestingly in Tokyo, eels are cut from the back, while in western regions of Japan, are cut from the stomach. Interestingly, it wasn’t always the case as recently as the 1960’s where Japan had the shortest life expectancy out of the G7 countries. So as I get my Japan Health Check, I'll share some reasons why Japan was able to achieve a longer life expectancy over the years. But first, the Japanese Ningen Dock is Japan’s comprehensive health check system for early detection of disease broken down in 3 parts, early detection of cancer, detection of lifestyle related diseases and the confirmation of one’s health status. Ningen meaning person and dock, like a dockyard inspecting and repairing ships. In 1954, Japan established it’s first Ningen Dock day, and remember at that time, Japan had the shortest life expectancy of all the G7 countries, largely due to high mortality rates from cerebrovascular disease and stomach cancer. But over the last 60 years, Japan’s increased it’s medical level while also implementing a universal health insurance system to lower medical costs and developed a high standard of healthcare such requiring employers to pay for standard health examinations, Ippan Kenkou Shindan for their full-time employees or having more comprehensive paid examinations such as the Ningen Dock. All on top of promoting a traditional healthy diet leading to one of the longest average life expectancies in the world. This 60,000,000 JPY House tour is pre-renovation so it may look a bit rough. It's a 160 square meters, 44 year old, 4LDK house with 2 garages and a backyard sitting on 181 square meters of land. So in Japan, housing properties are evaluated based on the land value plus the building value. In Tokyo, the average land value is about 1.2M yen 8110 USD per square meter, while in this area, on the outskirts, it averages about 330,000 yen / 2230 USD per square meters, which would value this house’s land at around 400,000 dollars. But since this house was built in 1980, has been poorly maintained, left un-renovated with no one living here for 3 years, the house value in Japan is considered close to zero. Day in the Life of a Japanese Elementary School w/ Only 8 Students Paolo fromTOKYO 2024-03-08 | A day in life of a Japanese Elementary School with only 8 students and 11 teachers. This is a typical day for a Japanese family with 3 kids all in Japanese grade school. We start from early in the morning when they wake up and follow them through their elementary school morning routine, their daily school studies, school lunch meal, after school activities and finally coming home and having dinner with their family. The kids attend Kojin Shogakko, a typical Japanese public school but the main difference is that there are only 8 students at the school between grades 1-6. There are many interesting facets about the Japanes students daily life at school including their Japanese school lunchtime “Kyushoku” which isn’t just a break to fill stomachs, but it’s considered a form of food education. By consuming nutritious meals, students learn about healthy eating habits which helps carry over into their home life. What’s even better, is that cost on average 224 yen about $1.50 per meal, which means that even students coming from families with a tight budget are guaranteed at least 1 healthy meal each and every day. Hidden in a back alley, just a few steps from Asakusa's Kaminarimon main street. It’s made a name for it’s self for it’s rich and uniquely Japanese born beef stew served in a hot iron pot. The shop started out as a bar by the current 3rd generation owner's grandfather but later he converted to a Yoshoku restaurant in 1936 well before it became popular in Japan many years later, as a high-end cuisine for the upper-class and fueled by Japan’s economic boom, happening entertainment districts like Asakusa were flooded with these restaurants trying to cash in as dining here became a status symbol. Yoshoku, with roots in Japan going as far back as the Meiji period, evolved over time to suite the Japanese pallet and culture, taking western dishes, altering the tastes and arranging it with rice.
