The ancient oak woodland in Dartmoor National Park is mysterious and magical place because of the shape and appearance of the trees with their are oddly twisted and contorted branches. Their gnarled trunks, some of which are as old as 500 years, zig-zag skywards from between a bed of granite boulders with a blanket covering of evergreen moss.
It's claimed that locals refuse to enter the woods at night due to its reputation of ghosts and hauntings. The stories include reports of a phantom pooch known as Jumbo, a ghostly procession of phantom monks who walk and old track to the north of the woods, and a pack of supernatural hellhounds that are said to belong to the Devil himself.
