In the Saarland, the tune of the "Bergmannslied" got a political character, when in 1934 Hans Maria Lux, a teacher from Saarbrücken, wrote the pro-German song "Deutsch ist die Saar" ("The Saar is German") for the referendum about the future status of the region, which was to be held on 13th January 1935. The campaign song, which was sung on the melody of the "Bergmannslied", appeared again when the Saarland became a French protectorate after WW II. On 23rd October 1955 another referendum was held about the status of the region, and in 1957, the Saarland became a part of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since this time, the tune of the "Bergmannslied" is often regarded as the unofficial anthem of the Saarland, and it is certainly better known than the semi-official "Saarlandlied". For many years, it was also used as identification signal of the public radio station "Saarländischer Rundfunk".

Lennet Kann (Leonard van Kann) was a famous citizen of Aachen, he lived from 1844 to 1916. He was apparently mentally slightly disabled, very tall and skinny and known for his weird stiff movements (especially in old age), and he basically was a beggar.
However, the citizens of Aachen liked him because he was harmless and kind, so they often gave him money or food and invited him to parties, where he was given certain honors and badges (which he always wore with pride on his suit).
Especially children and students loved him, these are the Domgrafen mentioned in the first stanza, the term literally translates to cathedral counts and means the youth living around the famous Aachen cathedral. The people mentioned in the beginning of the second stanza are other beloved originals of Aachen: Spiene Jupp for example was a guy who sold wood shavings for a living, and Jokeb met et Feißje collected barrels. To this day, der Lennet is one of the most famous figures of Aachen, he is one of the most important characters in the local carnival tradition. The people of Aachen havent forgotten him, and he remains a beloved part of his hometown. The citizens of Aachen often use the story of Lennet Kann as an example for the local way of life, where people help each other out no matter what. The text is mostly in Standard German, but with a slight mix of Öcher Platt, the dialect of Aachen. It is a Ripuarian dialect and related to Kölsch, the dialect of Cologne.
