Detroit Harmony services the city with a vision to create a music ecosystem that not only gives instruments to students, but also nurtures their growth in music-making and the workforce. With a goal to eliminate barriers of access, the initiative offers private and mobile music lessons for youth of all ages and experience levels.

Malichi and his mother learned about Detroit Harmony and the music lesson program through their enrollment with community partner, Engaged Detroit (The Village PCL), a homeschool co-op and advocacy network on the city’s east side, founded by Bernita Bradley. Over the course of three months (April-June) students received free music lessons, worked with a teaching assistant, and gained their own instrument to take home and continue their practice.

To date, Detroit Harmony has collected over 3,000 instruments from across the city and distributed more than 2,000 of those to schools, community partners, and music programs citywide.
