Illumination Entertainment, one of the newest blockbuster animation companies, has reached a major milestone. The Despicable Me franchise, which includes Despicable Me 1-3 as well as Minions, has become the most successful animated franchise of all time. The previous record holder was DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek franchise.
DreamWorks is apparently working on Shrek 5, which is set to be a reinvention of Shrek and is set to release in 2019 and Illumination isn’t stopping the Despicable franchise any time soon; Minions 2 is set for release on 4th of July weekend in 2020.
Both Illumination Entertainment and DreamWorks Animation are under the control of Universal Pictures.
