About the Talk:
This session aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the
hydrological cycle, water resources, and the emerging challenges to
India’s water security. The session would highlight that water resources
are under increasing pressure from indiscriminate exploitation, climate
change, changes in land use/land cover, rapid urbanization and
industrialization, population growth, and rising water demand. It
emphasized the need for sound scientific understanding, systematic
monitoring, conservation, and rejuvenation of water resources to
strengthen water and food security.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Y.R. Satyaji Rao, Director of the National Institute of Hydrology,
Roorkee, is a distinguished hydrologist with a career spanning over three
decades. He holds Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from the
Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Master’s degree in Hydrology &
Water Resources Engineering from the Anna University, Chennai,
Doctorate degree awarded from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
Since joining NIH in 1992, he has contributed extensively to hydrological
research, with over 150 publications and more than 30 house and
consultancy projects. His expertise is recognized through his membership
in apex committees such as Central Water Commission, National Green
Tribunal, Bureau of Indian Standards, Department of Science and
Technology, and various state government departments.
His accolades include international fellowships from the United Nations
Development Programme, San Diego State University, USA and
International Water Management Institute, Sri Lanka, along with the
prestigious Association of Hydrologists of India Lecture Award in 2024.
Beyond research, Dr. Rao has played a pivotal role in outreach through
the National Hydrology Project, capacity-building initiatives, training
programs, and mass awareness campaigns. His research interests cover
coastal hydrology, nitrate transport modeling, and the impact of faulty
septic tanks on groundwater, alongside storm-water flood modeling. He
has successfully completed projects on river bank filtration for safe
drinking water, urban flood modeling, and assessing the impact of
aquaculture on groundwater in east coastal deltas. His career reflects a
blend of academic excellence, applied research, and national service in
advancing hydrological science and water resource management.
