Writer's block is something every musician faces at some point, myself included. Over the years, and especially since starting this YouTube channel, I've discovered a number of techniques that help me break through creative ruts and get ideas flowing again.
One of my favourite methods is sound design. Whether it's a modular synthesizer, a software synth, a collection of effects pedals, or whatever gear you have available, spending time focused purely on creating sounds can be incredibly inspiring. Not only can it spark the next track idea, but it also helps build a library of unique sounds that can be used in future productions.
In today's video, I put together a Eurorack modular system specifically to create a custom drum sample pack. The goal is simple: overcome writer's block, generate fresh ideas, and build a new track from scratch. Along the way, I explore the modules in the rack, patch kick drums, stumble upon some unexpected sounds, create a few strange textures, and eventually load the finished samples into the Teenage Engineering KO II (KO-2) to produce a complete track.
Modules featured in this video include Pamela's Pro Workout, Make Noise Maths, Mutable Instruments Plaits, Make Noise DPO, Make Noise Low Pass Gate (LPG), Intellijel uVCF, Instruō Càrn, ALM MFX, and the Happy Nerding FX Aid.
