This presentation is led by Yimika Erinle from Exponential Science. Cryptocurrency wallets are essential for managing crypto-assets, serving as the main interface for accessing blockchain networks and authorising transactions. However, design choices significantly affect their security, usability, and effectiveness. This research explores custodial, non-custodial, and shared-custodial wallet models, examining associated vulnerabilities. Through real-world incidents and academic papers, we systematise and analyse various attack methods.
We also review 84 notable incidents from 2012–2024, investigating gaps between academia and industry. Furthermore, we explore key recovery mechanisms and how design decisions impact security and user control, culminating in practical custody solutions for wealth managers and clients.
