Armi Ratia founded her brand Marimekko in Helsinki, Finland, in 1951. “Armi had this vision of creating something that would inspire people to live a happier life,” says Sanna-Kaisa Niikko, Director of Global Brand Marketing at Marimekko. Ratia wanted to empower women to be active in their clothes, so she and a team of young designers developed abstract shapes in bold colors, designs that would pop on the a background of white canvas and free women from the constricting silhouettes of the time.
Today, nearly 70 years since Ratia started on her mission to improve lives with design, the Marimekko brand has expanded to men’s and children’s clothing, and homeware. Now everyone has the opportunity to add an element of Marimekko, bringing joy to everyday life.
