The abandoned family ranch we explored holds a rich history dating back to 1840, when Don Francisco Valenzuela first settled in the area. A few decades later, Hispanic homesteading took place between 1890 and 1955, transforming the land into a thriving agricultural site with lush alfalfa and hay fields. The ranch boasted seven wells and impressive waterers, each spraying water over the crops.
Along the river, other family ranches flourished, with one even constructing a schoolhouse in 1927. But the year 1968 marked a significant change for the area. The construction of a dam caused a catastrophic loss of water, leading to the closure of the ranches and the devastating impact on the livelihoods of those who had depended on the fertile land for generations. The abandoned family ranch we explored held on for another seventeen years, until 1985, when it too succumbed to the changing tides.
Interestingly, historians believe that this land could have served as a crucial stopping point for pioneers and travellers coming from the Bradshaw Mountains and mining districts. It's fascinating to think about the different lives and stories that have crossed paths on this land over the centuries.
