There’s this pretty charming challenge going around asking for 3 Fictional Characters that you feel describe you! I was tagged by @riotcakes and at first I found it pretty challenging but ultimately landed on three, to which then I decided that 1) That was fun and I love seeing other people’s choices because it gives us a cool feel for people and 2) I wanted to challenge myself even further and find 7 more characters I can use to let you know a little more about me and my personality, so here are 10 fictional characters who in one way or another can #relate. #AmbulatoryWheelchairUsersExist I have heard various ways that people use to determine if someone is faking using a wheelchair; fromif a person using [a mobility aid] starts to run (in the scenario I heard, it was a cane user running for a bus) to if a wheelchair user has worn down shoes. In todays video I talk about some of the many reasons there are for people to use wheelchairs, how this prejudice is reinforced, and how to work to prevent violence/harassment toward disabled people with non-apparent disabilities.

This is my first Halloween after officially being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (through chromosome examination) last month and while thinking of Halloween costumes I definitely wanted to have an EDS theme. I decided to choose some characters inspired by my EDS symptoms in order to help illustrate what they are! Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is characterized by hypermobility, although symptoms and signs can be highly variable and include joint complaints, myalgia, skin problems, sleep apnea, pneumothorax and cardiovascular disease. Hope you enjoy the series!

(CW: mentions of physical intimacy, adjustment talk so maybe some internalized ableism) Dec 3rd was International Day of People with Disabilities and I was stuck in bed all day with my back and legs stuck in a pain flare. These past few years of EDS kicking my butt into isolated and symptomatic bed rest hasnt really allowed me to go on proper dates and date someone new so this video is about my current fears and insecurities regarding that. I focus on what my body will do, how embarrassed Id feel, but it definitely extends to how a new person might react; would they infantilize me and treat me like Im made of glass? Would they get grossed out? Would they awkwardly ghost me because they feel like Im too exhausting to be around because of my symptoms?
I think I mentioned I have hooked up with people since my EDS health decline and using mobility aids, but one night stands where I have yet to experience a pain flare in front of someone, or injure myself in front of them, faint in front of them, get gastro issues in front of them, etc. is a bit different than something long-term where they definitely would be there for those things.
Please dont take my current and temporary insecurities (dont expect them to last long) as a reason to feel hopeless! This is just where my mind is right now. There are definitely so many current couples that show me its definitely possible, here on YouTube there is:

This piece on 60 minutes as hosted by Anderson Cooper was pretty troubling to me; the piece appeared to be centered around how drive-by lawsuits abused the laws we have in place. Some who are sued complain that they are sued for such small details. The details matter, the details can cause pain, injury, or complete exclusion of your guests with disabilities, just because youre not informed and aware on who or how, doesnt mean its not true.
The focus shouldve been on that; on how inaccessibility can impact members of the disability community and how many businesses remain inaccessible to this day. Business owners are concerned, but for many, its the only way that changes would be made. Its been 26 years since ADA was signed into law, thats enough grace period, thats enough time to get these buildings up to code.
People with disabilities have been asking for equality, fighting for equality for so long and it is exhausting (so much so, itd be easy to understand why many dont self-advocate, I know that there are times when I have the strength to stand up to injustices made and when I dont). If a shakedown by drive-by lawsuits is needed to get things done, I say, so be it. If one finds that abusive, then advocate for more government involvement instead of justice and equality relying on claims, but either way, they will be held accountable. Its time business owners take responsibility and accountability for their actions or rather, lack thereof.
