A massive underground city has been discovered in Turkey.
Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient multi-level underground facility found in the Derinkuyu district in Nevsehir Province, Turkey. It extends to a depth of about 60 meters. It was large enough to shelter about 20,000 people together with their livestock, food and supplies.
It is the largest underground city that was excavated in Turkey and
is just one of hundreds of underground complexes found in Cappadocia.
The city that could accommodate up to 20,000 people had amenities such as wine and oil presses,cellars,stables,storage rooms,chapels and refectories.It could be closed from the inside with large stone doors and each floor could be closed off separately.
The complex has a unique feature on the second floor, a spacious room with a barrel vaulted ceiling. The room is thought to be used
as a religious school and had some rooms for studies as well.
There was also a large 55 meter ventilation shaft that provided
water to the villagers above and to those hiding underground if
the outside world was inaccessible.
It is thought to have been built in the 8th-7th centuries B.C.
It may have been enlarged in the Byzantine era.
During the Persian Achaemenid empire the city was used as a refugee settlement and many scholars believe that the city may have been built by the Persians.
Interestingly the city was connected via miles of tunnels to other
underground cities.
This complex and it's miles of tunnels are an amazing accomplishment and one wonders how this could be done. The sheer size of it would make it a challenge to build even with today's technology.
Aside from how, one wonders why. What could have motivated the building of such a complex large underground facility?
