The former Friar Gate engine house is now fully restored, let's go and have a look at this incredible restoration. The engine house has suffered many decades of abandonment and also a massive fire in 2013 so it's incredible to now see it restored. This incredible restored building was opened to the public on September 5th 2026.

The two-storey Engine House was built by Kirk & Randall of Sleaford to serve the railway between 1876, The Grade II-listed Engine House has been part of a £1 million 12-month Wavensmere Homes restoration programme, which has seen the derelict, fire-damaged building's shell reanimated into a showpiece marketing suite for the development

The engine house supplied the hydraulic power for the capstans, hoists and cranes in the adjacent warehouse and also for the goods lift at Friar Gate Station station.
Architecturally, this matched the former building and comprised a boiler house (adjoined by a 90ft high chimney) and engine room with the 8ft diameter accumulator housed in a square tower. The water supply came from a well (augmented via the mains) and was pumped to a large header tank situated on the roof of the warehouse.

Tannett & Walker of Leeds supplied the hydraulic machinery, but at some date between 1914 and 1922 the original steam engine was replaced by an electric motor. As a result, the boilers were removed and on Sunday, 28 February 1922 a trio of Nottingham steeplejacks felled the now redundant chimney by hand.

The goods depot closed in 1967, Who'd have thought that 59 years later it would look so amazing.
