A routine traffic stop turned into a fight in which a Plant City man successfully tased both himself and a deputy, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

The encounter began Tuesday afternoon on 10th Street after Bryan Roque, 30, was pulled over by Deputy Darren Goodwald for having a tag that did not match the grey Dodge Caravan he was driving, according to an arrest affidavit.

Deputies say Roque then exited his vehicle and fled from Goodwald, running around a house before unsuccessfully attempting to force a woman out of her car by pulling on its door and punching its window. He then continued to run northbound up 10th Street.

Goodwald caught up to Roque just north of Pond Avenue and attempted to detain him, deputies said.

A fight would ensue.

In a struggle, deputies say Roque successfully stole Goodwald's taser and pulled its trigger. The taser then struck both Roque and Goodwald, incapacitating them both.

While recovering from the taser, Goodwald attempted to reach for his agency-issued firearm, where he then discovered Roque's hand was already on top of the weapon. Deputies say Goodwald ordered Roque numerous times to let go of the firearm, but he initially refused.

Deputies say Roque eventually let go of the firearm and was successfully detained after another deputy arrived at the scene and fired his taser into Roque.

Roque was then arrested and transported to the Florida Hospital of Dade City for medical clearance, deputies say. Goodwald was also treated for injuries at the hospital.

Roque faces charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, carjackueing, resisting an officer with violence, grand theft and for depriving an officer of means of protection.

Roque has several arrests in Pasco County since the age of 19, jail He has been charged with grand theft, robbery and violation of probation before his arrest Tuesday.

He is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the Pasco County Jail.
